Saalik, thank you for welcoming us into your world of words as vibration. I loved getting a glimpse into words and their meaning for you, and through the love and legacy of your grandfather.

We have a word for it in Japanese: 言霊

Koto-dama, literally /say, utter, word/

+

/spirit, soul, can be also like phantom energy/

Thanks so much Ako! And thank you for sharing koto-dama with me! Words that describe words are a whole other level of profound.

Woahhhh this is so cool!! Word-spirit sounds dope. I wonder if speak-haunting could work lol, to get at that phantom energy.

Well penned!

Really loved this line, "There is so much depth, nuance, and soul in these three words. When you hear them, they’ll dance in your ears to the rhythm of your heartbeat."

And dang, your grandfather was quite something alright. Reminds me of Allama Iqbal in the fact that he was also fluent in several languages and had a PhD. For the longest time I only knew Allama Iqbal to be a poet, but turns out a lot of people who are known for their poetry knew a LOT more and were a lot more than mere poets.

I think in my second last post (Sleeping in Laundry Rooms) I quoted a couplet from a rather long poem by the last ruler of Spain from the Abbasyd dynasty. If I didn't look up his name I would've only thought him to be some shepperd romantic like majnoon lol. And what a tragic tale is that one, majnoon and layla's. It hits harder when you learn they were real people lol.

Dada’s a huge inspiration — don’t think I can live up to him, but I certainly aim to try haha. iA I can attain a glimmer of knowledge during my time here.

And I’ll have to check out that post! Days when leaders were ALSO poets don’t feel like they ever could have happened. Just like Layla Majnun, oof. Definitely hits different knowing it was real.

Love this essay! And our words actually affect how we experience the world. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-biolinguistic-turn/201702/how-the-language-we-speak-affects-the-way-we-think

Thanks Chris! And that’s a telling article. It’s so cool to see how science embraces something that our intuitions might only perceive at first

Beautiful article! Words are so powerful and this article reminds us to use our words judiciously, listen more carefully, and to not jump to inappropriate conclusions based on a quick translation. We all have to practice this better in our integrated world. I will remember this article when using a translator to communicate with my patients from a different region of the world. Thank you!

Beautiful essay, your lovely descriptions motivates me to keep learning languages and to experience the language based on the culture and context rather then reflecting it off a mere translation.
